The cornea is the clear front part of the eye. It is the major focusing element of your eye. Without a clear and regular cornea, light rays are not focused well which results in a blurry or degraded image.

Why would I need a Corneal Transplant?

There are a wide variety of diseases that can result in a cloudy or irregular cornea. Examples include: trauma, chemical or thermal burns, infections, ectasias (e.g. keratoconus), and dystrophies (e.g. Fuchs’ dystrophy). If conservative medical treatment cannot improve a corneal condition enough, then sometimes replacement of part of or the entire cornea is indicated to improve one’s vision.

What types of Corneal Surgery do you provide?

Drs. Gus Stern and Sidney Chang are both fellowship trained in Corneal/External Disease/Refractive which includes modern Corneal Surgery. They are the onlyfellowship-trained Corneal surgeons in the Hagerstown / Chambersburg Martinsburg / Cumberland area. They also perform the most number of corneal surgeries in the area and were the very first surgeons in the area to perform the innovative technique of Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK).

  • Descemet stripping endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK)
  • Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK)
  • Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK)
  • Ocular surface reconstruction (e.g. amniotic membrane transplantation)
